Hints and Tips for succeeding in the Pub Quiz!

The successful quiz player is the person who can store fact after fact, read up on current events, and later recall those facts from memory when required. Here are a few general rules and tips which you should bear in mind when attempting to succeed in your local pub quiz. If you have any other suggestions, please let us know.

  1. ENJOY YOURSELF! That's really what it's all about AND don't take it too seriously.

  2. Assemble a strong team of players. A diverse team pays off, so bring pals who are experts at different subject matter. You can find lots of potential new team mates at the Pub Quiz Regulars section.

  3. PUB QUIZ CHEATERS SUCK! Don't be the loser caught using any electronic device! As a player, you should know that menacing items such as cell phones, Blackberrys, etc...are strictly off limits, as is using reference materials, newspapers, etc... People get really competitive for the sake of a bar tab but being eliminated from play can be quite embarrassing!

  4. Keep fully abreast of current affairs, events in the news and the latest political scandal!

  5. Keep up to date with the singles and album charts and top movies at the box office (or at least try to have one member on your team who does).

  6. Read the newspaper. Remember those?

  7. Commit to memory the winners of recent and past sporting events, Oscars, Grammy's, virtual reality TV show winners and political elections, etc...

  8. Do not yell out the answers! There is nothing as annoying at a Quiz where a roomful of people are assembled together to play, when one person takes it upon himself to let the others know how 'smart' he is by yelling out the answer to a question that has just been asked. Either the offending person puts a sock in it or may be asked to take his 'wealth of knowledge' elsewhere.

  9. If a question asks you to name a person, usually providing the last name of that person will be good enough. However, there are some questions where you will be required to provide the first AND last name. For example, who said, 'I suppose Americans get a kick out of watching a crazy Brit family like us make complete fools of ourselves every week'? No points if you write The Osbournes or Sharon Osbourne. Ozzy Osbourne is the correct answer, of course. Likewise when you have questions about the Williams sisters (Serena or Venus?), President Roosevelt (Franklin or Theodore?), etc... It's best to write the first and last name otherwise the Quizmaster will probably not give you any credit!

  10. Always listen carefully to the wording of each question. There may be hidden clues or emphasis of certain words which may not at first seem significant. For example, if the Quizmaster asks you to name the BAND performing the song, you should know that he is looking for Van Halen, NOT David Lee Roth, Wham!, NOT George Michael, etc...

  11. Never, ever give more information than is requested. It may make you feel good to know that you are such an expert on a topic, but it won't earn you any extra credit. So, save the pencil lead!

  12. Be nice to your Quizmaster! It may seem like a glamorous job being up there in front of a competitive audience. But, it is actually quite a lot of work. Also, you should adhere to the universal Pub Quiz rule that states, 'The Quizmaster is always right! So, even if you are convinced that the answer is wrong, just take another sip of your drink and keep things friendly. In the words of Mark Walshe, it's just 'A Bit O' Fun in The Pub!' Buying the Quizmaster a drink is always appreciated and encouraged (but won't get you any extra points!).

  13. Order a drink or two! The bar normally provides the entertainment for free and would really appreciate your business at the bar.

  14. If you don't win the quiz, there is always next time. Now, let's play!
